Updated on: Tuesday, November 15, 2011

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal strongly pitched for academic and administrative reforms in higher education for the future of students with greater use of IT and introduction of the semester system.

"You need changes in internal administrative structure which require the university system to move to semester system because that will allow collaboration and mobility of students which is at the heart of empowerment," Sibal told a function here attended by members from the academia and industry.

"What the academia need to do is to ensure that traditional administrative structures need to be dismantled and you need to get advantage of the IT revolution that is taking place," he said.

Speaking at the first 'university-industry congress' here, he said by 2020 the country is aiming to raise the gross enrolment ratio from 15 at present to 30 per cent.

Talking about various initiatives launched by the ministry to connect various institutes through broadband network, Sibal invited the industry to work in tandem with the educational institutes in creating content.

Besides, he sought increased private sector investment in the education sector for its better future but without dilution of quality.

He also lauded CII for setting up a university-industry congress as a permanent mechanism for interaction between industry and academia.

The meet seeks to forge better linkages between industry and academia by deliberating on issues and concerns of both sides and create a framework for better collaboration.
