Chennai: 11 marine engineering students held for attacking their juniors

The Tiruvallur police on Saturday arrested 11 marine engineering college students on charges of attacking their juniors at the International Maritime Academy in Puduchataram on the Chennai -Tirupathi highway. Eight students were injured in the group clash, police said.

A brawl started over food in the hostel around 9pm and it later turned into a group clash. "Third year students and second year students fought around 1am on the college premises . Eight students were severely injured," a police officer said. The sources said the clash was between third year BTech marine engineering students and second year BSc nautical science students. The injured students were taken to Tiruvallur Government Hospital and treated as out-patients .

Based on a complaint lodged by nautical science students, Vellavedu police filed a case and arrested 11 students. They were booked under Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting , armed with deadly weapon ), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and in Indian Penal Code.
