Indian outsourcing sector overblown U.S. Consul-General

Updated on: Friday, March 27, 2009

Chennai: Apprehension over Indian outsourcing sector was overblown, due to uncertainty about the outsourcing policy of United States, said Andrew T. Simkin, U.S. Consul-General in Chennai.

Speaking at a seminar on Indo-US outsourcing business: The Road Ahead organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

From a recent statement by U.S. President made it clear that his Govt supports free trade.

Clarifying on the issue of H1B visa restrictions, Lawrence P. Lane, vice consul, Consulate General of the United States in Chennai, said that financial institutions that received money from public funding had to show enough proof that there were no U.S. citizens who could fill the vacancies before granting a visa to a worker from other nation.

A 2008 data showed that there were only 13 such institutions that received public funds and they put in roughly 700 H1B visa petitions that was less than one per cent of the total number of petitions filed, he added.

IT Secretary P.W.C. Davidar said that instead of the term business process outsourcing, it would be termed business in services, as outsourcing has brought out negative connotations.
