Kalam inaugurates digital library of ancient scriptures

Former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam inaugurated a first-of-its-kind digital library of ancient scriptures at the L D Indology Institute here.

Kalam said he was very impressed by the initiative of the institute, which has digitised prints of 2,200 manuscripts of ancient scriptures.

"This is a vital task, for providing information support to the research scholars engaged in indology research, particularly on Jainism and Hindu philosophy," Kalam said.

Kalam also delivered a lecture on 'Spirituality in Religion' and talked about his encounters with saints and philosophy.

The digital library contains over five lakh pages of 2,200 ancient books.

This is the first phase of a larger project, where the institute would be digitising 50,000 rare books and over 75,000, centuries-old manuscripts.

Institute's director J B Shah said the objective was to preserve the heritage literature and to make it available to scholars and students without compromising the safety of the manuscripts.

Catalogue of the digitised manuscripts would be available online, on the institute's website.
