Final year Madras IITians to mentor juniors

With several first-year students from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras not faring well in the exams, the institute, for the first time, has roped in final-year students to help the juniors.

Speaking to this newspaper on Monday, Prof L.S. Ganesh, dean (students), IIT-M, said final-year B.Tech students would be asked to help improve the academic performance of their juniors.

“Those final-year students who volunteer will mentor first-year students in the evenings. This is to help them get accustomed to the institute's complex academics and campus life. First-year students come just out of school, so it is difficult for them to get on with academics. So, we decided to launch this initiative,” he said.

The institute would come out with some more measures to help students perform well. He added that the institute had always been helping students to excel in academics.

“It is a learning experience for the senior students also as we learn the basics again and, as a student of IIT, we are always committed to helping our juniors and society,” said Karthik, a final-year student.
