Bihar govt comes to rescue of starving student - athlete

The Bihar government provided financial assistance to a budding female athlete, who is facing a severe financial crunch, and also urged the Centre to help her pursue studies and training at the Athletic Institute in Siliguri, West Bengal.

Kirti, a student of BA in a college at Barbigha in Sheikpura along with her three younger brothers is on the brink of starvation as their mother, who was the lone earning hand in the family, died last week.

Their father had died in 2006 and Kirti was left with no other choice but to think of selling her medals to pay for the last rites of her mother, district magistrate Birendra Prasad Yadav told.

"We have decided to provide an assistance of Rs 10,000 from the District Sports Association, besides an equal amount from the National Family Benefit Scheme to Kirti and her siblings," Yadav said.

The state government has also decided to include the family in the list of Below Poverty Line (BPL) and make necessary arrangements for them, he said.

"We will also provide merit scholarships to all four of the family," Yadav said adding he had approached his Begusarai counterpart for keeping her brothers in a child care home for free study and medicine facilities till they become adult.

"I am also going to write to the Centre (Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs) to adopt Kirti for study and training in the Athletic Institute in Siliguri in West Bengal for better career," Yadav revealed.

Meanwhile, the state Youth Congress, which brought the plight of Kirti to the fore, has also decided to grant Kirti a sum of Rs 25,000.
