ECE seems to be the prime choice of students

Chennai: A reflection from the first day of single window counseling reveals, Electronics and Communication was the prime choice of students.

Among the 500 candidates appeared for the first day councelling, 243 students opted for ECE, in comparison to just over half last year. With 94 students opting for Mechanical Engineering the contrast was sharper, 18.8 per cent opting for the stream, in comparison with 8 per cent last year.

Dropping from second to third place this year, the Computer Science and Engineering stream couyld manage to collect 75 students “ a decrease from 25 per cent last year to 15 per cent this time around.

Speaking while giving out admission orders to top 30 rankers in the morning session, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy told that 37 institutions started this year“ including five new government colleges - were added to the single window counseling system, taking the total available colleges in the State to 391, with 1,00,930 seats to offer.

Reading the trends of the students, all but one are offering Mechanical Engineering stream and 35 institutions are offering ECE stream. The other top choices are Electrical and Electronics and Civil Engineering, but only 23 of the new colleges are offering Computer Science this year. Every new institution started has four streams.

With just three choosing a self-financing institution, most students opted for government or aided colleges.

The Minister pointed out that with 50-odd colleges having received AICTE approval and awaiting university affiliation, the total intake under the single window system would be enough to satisfy most of the 1.23-lakh applicants.
