The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have invited applications for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE 2012) to be held on April 8 for admission to undergraduate courses — B.Tech., B.Pharm., B.Des, BS, integrated M.Tech., dual-degree M.Tech., integrated M.Sc., and M.Pharm. courses — conducted at the 15 institutes, the Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University, and the Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad.

The IITs, situated in Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropar, and Roorkee, are institutions of national importance offering excellent study facilities for engineering and technology and scientific, professional higher education and research.

The test will have two papers, each of three-hour duration — from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The question papers will consist of three sections on physics, chemistry, and mathematics, and the objective-type questions test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability.

For architecture and design courses, an aptitude test will be held on June 3, which includes free hand drawing, geometrical drawing, three-dimensional perception, imagination and aesthetic sensitivity, and architectural awareness.

The test centres include Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Puducherry, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirapalli, Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, Chennai, Mysore, Bangalore, Mangalore, Hyderabad, Guntur, Kurnool, Nellore, Tirupati, Vijayawada, and Warangal.
Eligibility

Those who have passed Plus Two or equivalent examinations with mathematics, physics, and chemistry scoring 60 per cent marks (55 per cent for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the physically challenged) in the first chance on or after October 1 or are appearing for the examination in 2012 may apply.

The applicant must have been born on or after October 1 1987 (October 1, 1982 for the reserved sections). Those with an engineering diploma with 60 per cent marks (55 per cent) may also apply.

Those who have attempted the examination in 2010 or earlier are not eligible to appear for the test again.

Applications can be submitted online and offline. This can be done till December 10.

Offline application forms and information brochure can be had from November 11 to December 5 from designated branches of Indian Bank on payment of Rs.1,800 (Rs.1,000 for reserved sections and Rs.200 for women).

In Kerala, the bank braches are in Thiruvananthapuram (Mahatma Gandhi Road); Ernakulam (Shamugham Road); Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur.

In Tamil Nadu, they are in Kanyakumari; Madurai (main branch), Salem (main), Tiruchirapalli (Cantonment), Tirunelveli (Town), Vellore (Main), Coimbatore (R.S. Puram), Chennai (Adayar, Annanagar, Royapuram, and T. Nagar).

In Karnataka, the branches are in Bangalore (Jayanagar, Malleswaram, Kempe Gowda Road), Bijapur, Davangare, Gulbarga, Mangalore, Mysore (Asoka Road).

The main branch at Puducherry will also distribute the forms and information brochure. The last date of receipt of completed application forms at the IITs is December 15. Admit cards will be sent before March 15.

Rare branches and disciplines in undergraduate programmes are among the specialities of the IITs.

An example is the B.Tech. course in aerospace engineering conducted at the IITs in Chennai, Mumbai, Kanpur, and Kharagpur.

A five-year M.Tech. dual-degree course in aerospace engineering is offered at the institutes in Chennai and Kharagpur. IIT Madras offers a B.Tech. course in naval architecture and ocean engineering.

Civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering and computer Science and engineering branches are available at almost all IITs.

The Indian School of Mines offers B.Tech. programmes in mining engineering, mining machinery engineering, petroleum engineering, and so on.

IIT Guwahati conducts the B.Des course. IIT Kanpur recently introduced the four-year BS course in chemistry, mathematics and scientific computing, physics, and economics. The five-year B.Arch. course is available at the IITs at Kharagpur and Roorkee.

The Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University offers the B.Tech. course in various branches, including ceramic engineering and metallurgical and mining engineering; the five-year M.Pharm. dual-degree course; and the five-year integrated M.Tech. course in engineering physics, industrial chemistry, mathematics, and computing.
