TNAU to study distillery spent wash on crop production

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has entered into a MOU with the Distillery pision of Erode-based Bannari Amman Sugars Ltd for a collaborative research on spent wash for a period of three years.
 
With a budget outlay of rs.10.6 lakh, the research would eco-monitor the land application of biomethanated distillery spent wash on crop production, soil health and sustainable environment, a TNAU release said.
 
Distillery washes are rich in organic matter and nutrient especially pottasium and nitrogen, and hence it can be utilised as a source of liquid manure, it said.
 
Tamil Nadu has 19 distilleries, located in major sugarcane areas, which generate about 3.2 billion litres of spent wash annually, the release said.
