IIT JEE cheating case: IIT-Roorkee still to file an FIR

Even six months after mass copying came to light during IIT entrance examination, authorities are yet to file an FIR in the case even after orders of the Chairman, Joint Admission Board.

The case of "copying and providing assistance" to some candidates appearing for Joint Entrance Examination for IITs came to light in room S-0 at Gyani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology which was one of the centres in Bhatinda in April 2011.

Even after orders by JAB chief to file a police FIR in the matter, IIT-Roorkee is yet to take action on it.

Replying to an RTI application by one Vipin Gupta, officiating registrar said, "FIR not lodged. Decisions pending." He also said action taken report in the matter has not yet been prepared and matter is under investigation.

When contacted, JEE incharge at IIT Roorkee Prof U P Singh told over phone that no FIR has been lodged in the matter.

The inquiry committee constituted by the Chairman of the Joint Admission Board Sanjay G Dhande, who is also Director IIT-Kanpur, had proved copying charges and "undesirable nexus among college authorities, certain invigilators and an employee of the Gyani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology."

Dhande ordered IIT-Roorkee to file a police FIR in the matter, three representatives of the Institute present at the centre Dr Prakash Biswas, Prof CSP Ojha and Sunil Kumar to be banned from any association with the JEE for five years and debarred one candidate Heenu Bansal from appearing in any of the examinations conducted by JEE, GATE, JAM, J-MAT and CEED in future.
