Positive approach

In order to provide emotional assistance to its students as well as faculty, the Jamia Millia Islamia recently started counselling services on its campus. The aim is to bring positivity into people's lives by helping them with their psychological, work or relationship related problems.

Elaborating on the importance of these counselling sessions, Wahida Khan, honorary director, counselling and guidance centre at Jamia Millia Islamia says, "The university, in the past, has held many workshops to guide students. But with the passage of time, the university has realised that there are many issues an individual faces in his/her life - be it social, personal, family or work related. These issues directly or indirectly affect them, especially when they are unable to handle them."

With this in mind the university decided to conduct the counselling sessions as a routine activity not only for students but also for its faculty members, says Khan.

Counselling is provided free of cost to anyone in the university who feels like sharing his/her problems. The counselling session is a one-on-one affair, thus eliminating any scope of invasion into an individual's privacy.

"Any kind of counselling requires trained counsellors. This is the reason why the university has appointed two professional counsellors to conduct the sessions on the university campus," explains Khan.

The sessions deal with a gamut of issues, which include low confidence, relationship problems, depression, feeling of inadequacy, lack of concentration, memory problems, anxiety, exam fear, mood swings, phobia, loneliness, and stress, among others.

"Though the counselling has recently started, realising its importance, the university has decided to conduct these sessions permanently on campus," adds Khan.

The university has fixed the counselling timings from 1 pm to 5 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 10 pm to 2 pm on Tuesdays, every week.
