Bogus students on rolls

Updated on: Wednesday, September 21, 2011

Maharashtra Government is yet to take action against 85 schools in Latur and Osmanabad district, who enrolled thousands of bogus students.

The revelation comes in the backdrop of a recent student survey in Nanded district, which found that as many as 1.4 lakh students, out of the seven lakh enrolled, were bogus. Officials undertook verification of students in 2006 in Latur and last year in Osmanabad and found board of directors of 85 schools guilty of enrolling bogus students, a senior official told.

In 2006, it was found that in private educational schools in Latur district, 40,000 bogus students were on roll. Latur Zilla Parishad sent a proposal to take action against 33 primary as well as 15 secondary schools, but no action has been taken by the government.

In April 2010, about 30,000 bogus students were found in schools in Osmanabad district. However, the administration is yet to act against managements of the concerned schools.

Zilla Parishad's 'Shikshan Samiti', empowered to act against such schools, have functionaries of political parties as members and hence they desist from taking any action, the official said. There is a need to empower Zilla Parishad CEO or the District Collector to take action in such matters, he added.
