Students of other varsities allege foul play in law admissions

Delhi University's Faculty of Law has offered provisional admission to 29 students from the School of Open Learning on the condition that they will submit their final year results by October.

This notice sparked off allegations of foul play and discrimination by about 25 students belonging to other universities who have missed the last admission date set by Delhi University as their results are yet to be declared. They insist that they have every right as their peers from SOL.

“I ranked fourth in the entrance exam and went through a tough counselling session to make it to the admission list and now my admission is cancelled because my university has not given me my results. Why should I suffer just because I did not study in SOL?” asked Chaudhary Charan Singh University student Pulkeet Singh.

Following the notice, angry students were quick to make a written complaint to the Vice-Chancellor and also managed to rope in student associations to support them.

“We met Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid and submitted a written complaint,” said Deepika Deshwal, a National Students' Union of India activist, who is supporting the students.

Meanwhile, the university officials are baffled by such a strong reaction. “How can we temporarily admit students from other universities without their results? The SOL is part of our university and we are sure about receiving the results in October. We simply cannot take such a chance with an outside college. We sympathise with these students but it is simply not their right to be admitted into Delhi University without the required documents,” said a university official.
