Fight tough for admissions under sports quota at BHU

Competition is on for admissions under sports category in the current academic session (2011-12) at Banaras Hindu University ( BHU).

A total of 65 seats under sports category at undergraduate level and 26 seats at post-graduate level are available in the university, and this year it is going to be a tough fight for each seat.

Not only the strength of candidates has risen, majority of them are the ones who have played at national-level sports competitions. The counselling letters have been sent to the candidates, which are nearly four times the number of available seats, said D K Dureha, general secretary, USB. It may be mentioned here that counselling letters are sent to candidates desirous of admissions under sports category only on approval of USB in the varsity. In order to be eligible for sports seats (supernumerary seats) in various faculties and institutes, the candidate is required to pass a qualifying examination.

In addition, the candidate must fulfil a norm of Association of Indian Universities (AIU) which states that he should have played an inter-university tournament.

Besides, the candidate should have played national (senior/junior/sub junior/ School Games Federation of India) at least up to qualifying examination or in inter zonal/zonal inter-university tournament/championship of AIU games, without any break in participation.
As per reports of USB office in the varsity, the dates have been fixed for practical tests and admission under sports category in this month. For post-graduate level courses, the practical tests and admissions would be done on September 10 and September 11 while undergraduate courses would witness admissions on September 20 and September 21 this year.

The candidates found eligible for admission under sports seats are required to qualify practical test (modified AAPHER youth fitness test of 40 marks and playing ability test of 60 marks in the concerned game or event). The candidate must secure at least 35% marks in each test, which is conducted by a committee constituted by USB in consultation with the controller of examination, added the general secretary of USB.

It is also worth mentioning that the merit of the qualified candidates for the admission in sports seats is decided by the sports achievement marks awarded on the basis of certificates of achievements. However, a candidate who has represented India or an Indian (combined) university team in world universities' game is entitled for direct admission provided he or she has passed the qualifying examination and applied for admission in the course before the last date of submission of application form.

In addition, there are a number of games/sport certificates that are not considered as these games are either not approved by the AIU or the university does not have sufficient infrastructure. The games include ball badminton (men and women), baseball, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, fencing, korfba, pistol/rifle shooting, rowing, softball, tenicoit, karate, boxing, carom, circle kabaddi, gatka and taekwando.
