Madras High court reiterated the rule of Coimbatore Anna university that not to allow post graduate students, who obtained degree through distance education, in Ph.D.

Natarajan, a post graduate student was refused to admit himself in Ph.D. Thence he filed a petition in High court against the rule, which was implemented by Anna university. Accordingly, a student can not be able to do his/her Ph.D. degree, if he/she had obtained master degree via distance education. Natarajan insisted in his petition that he should be permitted to perform his Ph.D. in Anna university. He has done his master degree through correspondence.

But the High court denied to annul the order of Coimbatore Anna university and corroborates, 'the AICTE circular of February last year asserting that the degrees and diplomas which are awarded through distance mode of education will not be entertained. This is policy decision of AICTE. For the same purpose, AICTE also issued the notice.

Hence, this new regulation will clearly be applicable to Anna university, it cannot be able to admit the student to Ph.D. The court has no reasons to interfere in to this issue. The order of the director of research centre of Anna university can not be nulled'.
