Include college in list to admit students for counselling

Updated on: Wednesday, August 03, 2011

The Madras High Court bench directed the state government to include an Engineering College, in which Union Minister M K Alagiri is a trustee, in the list of colleges authorised to admit students who come for counselling, for the 2011-12 academic year.

Justice S Manikumar gave the direction when a petition filed by one S Balasubramanian, authorised signatory of the college, came up before him.

The Petitioner submitted that Daya Engineering College at nearby Sivarakottai is managed by the M K Alagiri Educational Trust. He claimed the All India Council for Technical Education had granted permission to begin admissions from 2011-12 after an expert team inspected it on May 18.

The college had also got the nod for participating in counselling conducted by Anna University of Technology (AUT).

However, officials were 'deliberately' refusing permission as Alagiri was one of the trustees, though some 'trivial' defects pointed out by AUT had been rectified he said.
