Poor response for nursing courses in Hassan, Karnatka

Updated on: Saturday, July 30, 2011

Even though nursing is a sought-after career option for many, thanks to lucrative opportunities overseas, it failed to attract local students in Hassan. There are only 33 local students in two nursing colleges started in the district in 2006.

"Students in rural areas are not aware of the career opportunities that nursing offers. Also nursing classes starts late -- in November. By then most children will be joined for other traditional under-graduate courses." said R Sarojini Devi, principal, Holenarsipura government nursing college in Hassan. Of the 110 students in the college, just three are from the district.

The principal added that the college had requested Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences to conduct the counselling and admission process earlier so that the classes could be commenced before November.

The college is also planning to introduce awareness programmes for pre-university students. "There is a huge demand for Indian nursing graduates in foreign countries. They also offers good remuneration. However, rural students are not aware of it," she said."This year, we are expecting at least 10 to 15 local students, she added.

The situation is no different in the Government Nursing College in Hassan. Of the 282 student, only 30 students are from the district.
