71 K students bag junior college seats online

Updated on: Friday, July 29, 2011

By the end of the first round of online admissions for the general category on Wednesday, a little over 71,000 students, including bifocal, had finished confirming their seats with the allotted colleges. The good news is that colleges still have plenty of seats left for the second round of general category admissions which will be announced on August 1.

Many candidates who have already confirmed their admissions are anxiously awaiting their betterment option on the second list.

“As all the candidates who had already confirmed their admissions under the bifocal category were considered again for the general round, many names were repeated. We have about 150 vacant seats,” said Tushar Desai, principal of D G Ruparel College in Matunga. “As the allotment of seats was not done to the full capacity on the first general list, extra seats available for the second merit list,” he added.

“Most students have confirmed their seats this time. Only those few who have secured admissions under various quotas haven’t confirmed their seats,” said Deepika Bhatia, vice-principal of H R College in Churchgate.

One welcoming trend this year was the sudden demand for seats in the arts stream, which saw a sharp rise in cut-offs. “Students are also confirming their admissions very enthusiastically this year. I hope that they won’t withdraw their admissions later. As of now, there have been no withdrawals,” said Marie Fernandes, principal of St Andrew’s College in Bandra.

Many principals believe that students were less choosy this year due to the rising cut-offs. “Nobody wants to take a chance. So students are either going after the course of their choice or the college. Getting both together looks difficult this year,” said the principal of a south Mumbai college.

Most colleges have already surrendered their vacant seats for the next round of admissions. Some colleges, however, were unable to do so by Wednesday evening. “We have given the colleges extra time and extended the deadline till 9 am on Thursday. We haven’t faced any major problems this year and that is a good sign. Students need not worry about seat allotments,” said a senior education official from the office of the deputy director of education, Charni Road.
