Over 60% seats in UP technical colleges yet to be filled

With only a few students selected in the Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Exam turning up for counselling, over 60 per cent seats in private engineering and management colleges are expected to remain vacant this year.

"There are 810 colleges affiliated to Gautam Buddh Technical University, Lucknow (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU), Noida in which admission process is on in different streams. Seeing the response of the students it appears that over 60 per cent seats will remain vacant", a senior Technical university official told.

Of the total 22,920 candidates who appeared for the MBA entrance, 20,735 students qualified the exam but only 5000 students have locked their seats so far in the counselling, he said.

"With total 33,570 MBA seats available in colleges, all of them are unlikely to be filled. Last year also only 18,500 MBA seats were filled. The situation is worse this year, with students leaving their seats if colleges of their choice is not available", he said.

Similar is the situation with B.Tech course in which of the 1,30 lakh students appearing for entrance examinations, only 82,195 qualified but only 36,000 got their certificate verified thus become eligible for counselling.

"As against a total of 1.10 lakh seats of B.Tech in the state, only 18,000 students have so far appeared in counseling. If even all the successful students lock their seats, about 70 per cent seats will remain vacant," the official said, adding last year 25,000 students had taken admission in B.Tech courses.

The situation is not different for MCA courses in which total numbers of seats are 9,665 but only 4,393 have cleared the examinations and less than 2000 students have locked their seats so far.

Mayawati government had bifurcated the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) last year and constituted Mahamaya Technical University, Noida and Gautam Budh Technical University, Lucknow.

While GBTU caters to western UP comprising of Saharanpur, Meerut, Moradabad, Agra, and Aligarh pisons, the GBTU caters to eastern and central UP.
