The second round of junior college admissions will begin on Monday at 5 pm as the deputy director of school education will release the second merit list for bifocal courses in science and commerce.
After the first round, more than 3,000 bifocal seats were surrendered by colleges and this will be made available for students in the second round. However, principals are not expecting a huge difference in cut-offs from the ones in the first list.
A senior official from the deputy director’s office said, several students, who have not taken admission in the first allotment round, have already secured admissions to their preferred colleges during the offline process.
There were more than 18,000 online applications for the bifocal courses in science and commerce streams. However, the number of seats available online this year was 11,528, around 3,000 more seats than last year. After the first round of allotment, 11,022 students were allotted a seat in colleges across the city and out of these 7,614 students confirmed their admissions. In the second round, therefore 3,408 seats will be available for students. Many students will also get betterment options.
Out of the 11,528 seats which were available in the online process, 506 seats will remain vacant even in the second round as nobody opted for these seats. These seats will be filled later by respective colleges among the students who have applied in general science stream and are interested in bifocals on the basis of merit.
The cut-offs in preferred colleges might still remain high, as there are not many seats available. In Birla College, where the admissions for computer science closed at 96.18% in the first list, the percentage might dip only by one or two percentage points, said principal Naresh Chandra. “We have only 20 to 25 seats left after the first round and there will be many students who have scored between 95% to 96%. The cut-offs will plummet by few percentage points,” Chandra said.
MB Kekare, principal of LS Patkar College in Goregaon, said, “Last year, we had almost 50% seats left for the second bifocal round. This year,we have only 10-15% seats left after the first round. In the aided section, there are only 5 to 6 seats left. So we are expecting the cut-offs to dip marginally by a few points.”
