Even as serial blasts hit Mumbai followed by heavy rains on Thursday morning, several junior college aspirants could not make it to the college to secure their admissions.
After receiving calls from several college officials about the low turn out, the office of deputy director of school education, extended the admission date by a day. Thursday was the last day for students to secure admissions after the first merit list for bifocals was out on July 12. The students were given two days to secure admissions in the colleges.
An official from the deputy director’s office said, “Colleges have been calling since morning to inform that few students have taken admissions. After the blasts on Wednesday night and heavy rains on Thursday, students might have preferred to stay back home. Therefore, we have extended the process by a day. Students can now submit forms till Friday 2 pm.”
He added, “The extension will not affect the schedule. The second merit list in the bifocals will come out by July 18.” A principal of a south Mumbai college said, “Most students had taken admissions on the first day after they were allotted seats. However, there were some who have not still secured admissions. Few students came to the college to secure their seats. The education department will need time to update the vacant seats in the system, which will now be delayed by a day. We hope that it will not delay the process .”
3.5 L con: Pupil gets duped by tout
A student who ‘acquired’ admission into the coveted course of Bachelor’s in Mass Media (BMM) in Jai Hind College, through a tout, was in for a surprise on Thursday. Authorities told him that the receipt handed over to him was fake. The student, who allegedly paid Rs 3.5 lakh to secure admission, with just 67%, was told by the tout that the admission has been secured under the “management quota”. However, the college management denied giving admission to the student.
