Most students in Mumbai lapped up the option offered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to be assessed by their schools in Class X, but there has been no corresponding dip in the number of students applying to junior colleges in the city. Applications received from CBSE students in the online admissions to junior colleges have in fact slightly increased.
While more than 60% students in most CBSE schools opted out of board exams, applicants have gone up by almost 200. The education department had said school-based examinees can only apply offline, once online admissions end. The office of the deputy director of education was not sure of the reasons for the rise. An official said, “There is no way to check if the students who gave the school-based exams have applied online. The department will have to rely completely on information provided by principals of CBSE schools. We hope principals will not furnish wrong information as their own students will suffer later. But it is also possible that the number of CBSE students have gone up in the city.”
The official also stated that the only way to verify if students who have applied have actually appeared for the board exams is to check their hall tickets when they actually approach the colleges for securing admissions.
Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar High School, Santa Cruz, said, “In my institution, around 70% students opted for the school exam, and most took admission in the school.” Cherian George, principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Powai, said only 18 students took the board exam and 188 students opted for school exams, and almost all have been accommodated. At Rajhans Vidyalaya, Andheri, principal Deepshikha Srivastava said, “We accommodated all students who took the school exam in our school, a handful, interested in commerce and arts, want to take admission in junior colleges. They are awaiting the state decision.”
However, P C Chhabra, principal of Delhi Public School, Nerul, said he approved forms of all students who approached him. “We do not know if all students who gave the school exam applied to our school. We signed all forms that sought approval for online junior college admissions,” he said.
