Put off by cut-off? Don?t lose hope

Updated on: Friday, July 01, 2011

Students who have cleared their HSC examinations but not yet managed to secure a seat in a degree colleges need not lose hope.

As the fourth and final list came out on Wednesday, several students could not make it to their college of choice due to their relatively low scores and high cut-offs. These students can now apply to distance education or diploma courses in polytechnic institutions to keep their dreams of higher education alive.

Several low scorers are trying to seek admission under the management quota for courses such as Bachelor of Mass Media, Bachelor of Management Studies etc. For the remaining students, distance education programmes offered by the University of Mumbai and Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) have plenty of courses to offer.

Mumbai University's Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) will start its admission process from the third week of July. For the first time, admissions to the first year in any course (undergraduate/post-graduate) will be conducted online.

An official said, "This year, we are not introducing any new courses. Close to 40,000 students apply to our first-year courses every year. Students who have scored at least 35% can apply for most of IDOL's courses."

Students who wish to pursue vocational studies can opt for courses offered by institutions affiliated to the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) and the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE).

D Meshram, joint director of DTE, said: "There are degree courses available in hotel management and architecture, which are approved by AICTE. MSBTE-approved courses are offered in private polytechnic institutions across the state. They conduct their own admission process."

Besides, Industrial Training Institutes train students in job-oriented streams.
