The second merit list for degree colleges brought little relief to students on Thursday. Most of the top colleges saw a miniscule drop of 1 or 2 % in their cut-offs, so those students aiming to make the cut in these institutions were left disappointed. In some colleges, admissions to certain courses have closed as all their seats are already filled in.
“All our own students applied for the BCom seats and it got filled. We had no seats left for outsiders,” said Manju Nichani, principalof KC College at Churchgate. She also added that the cut-offs might not come down drastically in the remaining lists either, since most of the applications have come from 80% and above scorers. Similarly, St Xavier’s has closed admissions to its BSc course as their seats are already filled. At N M College in Vile Parle, the second list for B Com opened to outsiders and the cut-off stopped at a staggering 95.20%. “I don’t see the percentage coming down any further since we are also running out of seats. In fact, the remaining cut-offs might also stop at the same percentage or maybe 1% less,” said Sunil Mantri, principal of NM College.
“There’s no dearth of seats in good colleges. But if all students are only racing for the top five or six colleges, then there is bound to be problems,” said a principal of a suburban college. Some principals pointed out that once admissions are over, students might withdraw admission from aided courses if they seek admission in unaided courses in other colleges.
