The Supreme court today extended till June 30 the last date for filling up the 50 per cent ‘all India quota’ in the Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination, failing which the vacant seats will fall in favour of state governments.
A vacation bench of justices P. Sathasivam and A.K. Patnaik extended the June 25 deadline by five days after the government, Medical Council of India and the petitioners, who included some candidates and NGOs, said they have no objection to it.
The apex court had on May 13 given a timeline for counselling to post graduate medical courses under All India quota.
The court was today informed that 136 seats were still vacant under the All India Quota.
The counsel appearing for the Centre, however, said “every year, the apex court is moved at the eleventh hour seeking extension of the last date to fill the all India quota. This has to be regulated at some point.”
