High cut-offs at jaipur's Maharani's College

Updated on: Saturday, June 25, 2011

Seeking admission in state's biggest girls' college, Maharani's College, has become tougher. Those aspiring for a B.Com degree need to have 91% or above, while other popular courses in science and humanities, too, have seen a rise in the first cut-off list declared on Friday evening.

The cut-off marks in all three streams have jumped between 3%-5 % owing to good result this year. Even in BA Pass Course, the cut-off has seen a rise of 3% compared to previous year.

Science subjects — Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology has also seen a rise in percentage. This year, the college received over 7,500 forms against total of a little over 2,600 seats in various degree programmes.

Previous year, the college received 10,000 forms. The decline in number of forms due to that trend of high cut-off list over the years has discouraged students (in general) who have secured below 75%.

The cut-off is much higher than many colleges of Delhi University, Jawahar Lal Nehru University and other universities. "This means only the creamy layer will study in this college in a highly-competitive atmosphere leading to the holistic development of students," Kusum Jain, principal, Maharani's Girls College, said.

The success rate of students in Class XII (CBSE and RBSE) has increase the cut-off percentage for popular courses. This trend is likely to continue as other constituent colleges will declare their first cut-off list soon.

According to college authorities, around 3,059 students applied for B.Com (pass) against a total of 300 seats and 800 applied for B. Com (Honours') with 180 seats. For science, they had 1,591 forms against 340 seats in pass and honours courses and in arts they have 2,728 forms.
