Post IIT entrance results, students pour into Kota coaching institutions

After Kota's performance in IIT-JEE improved this year, bagging three position in top 10, hundreds of IIT and medical aspirants have started pouring into Kota to seek admission in the premier coaching institutes. Admissions would continue till the mid-July. With more students attracted to Kota, the coaching institutes have become a multi-million dollar industry.

"With average annual coaching fees of Rs 50,000-60,000, school fee of Rs 20,000-30,000 and an average monthly spend of Rs 5,000 per student for food and lodging, the coaching "economy" is estimated to be over Rs 1,000 crore per year in Kota, roughly three times the cost of an IPL team for a decade. Many IIT graduates have also started their own training programmes, marketing them with the 'IITian' tag," Manoj Sharma, vice-president (operations & business development), Resonance Eduventures Pvt Ltd, in Kota said.

Sharma said that 8,741 aspirants have been selected in IIT-JEE in the last 10 years.

Around 75% of the aspirants who come to Kota are from other states. They enroll for short-term or a two-year full-time coaching programmes to prepare for these entrance exams. In 2010-11, around 80,000 students came to Kota to prepare for competitive exams, including IIT-JEE, AIEEE, AIPMT/State PMTs and various other medical entrance examinations. This year the Kota coaching institute authorities believe the number would cross the 90,000-mark. Allen Career institute director Naveen Maheshwari said, "Last year, there were 24,000 students in our institute. We expect this year there would be 30,000 students as 24,000 have already applied for admission even though the admissions would continue till July 15."

Moreover, as the aspirants have put a lot of faith in the coaching institutes, these institutes have also come up with advanced facilities. Career Point, has started a programme —"Career Point Live"--— which would enable students to attend lectures online. Managing director of the institute, Pramod Maheshwari said, "This is a paid service which we have introduced for students who are unable to attend our coaching in Kota. These facilities have been introduced in Baroda, Shivpuri, Rohtak and Ambala."

Bansal Classes Bansal Classes have also introduced its coaching classes for AIEEE from this year. Earlier, they were into IIT-JEE entrance coaching. P K Bansal of Bansal Classes said, "The Kota coaching institutes have retained the growth level this year.

There were three in top 10 ranking of IIT from Kota. Students from all over the country come to Kota for coaching." He said that from this session they have started coaching separately for AIEEE aspirants as the difference between IIT and AIEEE more marked than earlier in terms of pattern. Bansal said this year around 2,122 aspirants were selected from Bansal Classes in IIT-JEE.
