In a swift and significant move, the state government on Wednesday accepted the Patna University (PU)'s proposal for enhancing the sanctioned seats in undergraduate classes of its colleges.
State higher education director Sita Ram Singh said that PU could now admit students on enhanced seats from the current academic session itself. The department has okayed the university's proposal in toto.
According to a notification issued in this regard, Patna Science College will now have 600 instead of 300 seats in BSc Part I honours class and Vanijya Mahavidyalaya 400 instead of 300 seats in BCom Part I class. In B N College, the number of sanctioned seats has been increased from 156 to 350 in science and from 400 to 600 in arts.
In Patna Women's College, the number of seats has been increased from 64 to 250 in science, 300 to 600 in arts and 200 to 300 in commerce. In Magadh Mahila College, the sanctioned strength has been increased from 128 to 256 in science, from 300 to 450 in arts and from 200 to 250 in commerce. Patna College will now have 600 seats instead of 400 in BA Part I honours class.
PU had sometime back increased the seats in different colleges without obtaining the government's approval. The state HRD department last year objected to the university's unilateral decision and directed the university to admit students against sanctioned seats only. Student organizations had been up in arms against the government move.
The state HRD department later asked the university to send a proposal. The proposal was received by the HRD department in the afternoon and a favourable decision was taken within an hour, said the higher education director.
