Despite cutoff jump, brisk admissions in science

Science courses may have seen an unprecedented jump in the cutoffs, but many colleges filled up a significant number of seats for general candidates on the first day itself. Despite a hike of around 3% to 7%, colleges such as Miranda House, Kirori Mal and Sri Venkateswara recorded a high number of admissions in these courses. In fact, Miranda House crossed its intake capacity in BS c mathematics (H) course with as many 47 aspirants taking admission against the total 35 seats.

Miranda House admitted 26 general candidates in chemistry (H) as against 31 stipulated seats and 20 in physics (H) for which it has a total of 35 seats. "We are now feeling a bit nervous. We have been reeling under excess admission in science coursessincelast year. Whilein mathematics the admissions have already exceeded the total seats,wehavefilled 75% seatsin physics and chemistry also. In botany andzoology,too,wehave crossed the half-way mark. The next three days will be crucial," said principalP ratibha Jolly.

At KMC, despite a 7% hike in cutoff for physics (H) the college admitted 42 students — the total intake is 52. In chemistry (H) it admitted 50 students on Thursday while it has a total of 52 seats. "In mathematics (H) we have admitted 37 students. The cutoffs may be high, but there are takers. It will not be wrong to say that popularity of basic sciences is back. In fact, last year we admitted over 265 and 240 candidates in physics and chemistry, respectively, for a total capacity of 116 seats in each. There were just about 20-odd dropouts," said KMC principal Bhim Sen Singh.

Even at Hans Raj, of the 200-odd admissions more than 60 are in science courses. "We expect more takers in the next few days. The number of highs corers has significantly increased," said principal VK Kwatra.

On south campus, Sri Venkateswara College admitted 26 students in statistics (H) against 31 seats. "In physics (H) we admitted 14, while for chemistry and zoology the number stands at 29 and 17, respectively. We also admitted 15 students in mathematics (H)," said admission convener, NirmalKumar.
