Girls have an edge with lower cutoff

Updated on: Thursday, June 16, 2011

Girls have a better chance of getting into DU thanks to the special relaxation offered to them by many off-campus co-educational colleges. As many as 18 colleges will give a discount of 1% to 5% to girls in the first cutoff list in various courses when admissions begin on Thursday.

The relaxation in evening colleges is higher as compared to day colleges.

Moti Lal (evening), Satyawati (evening) and Ramanujan College will relax the cutoff for girls by 5% while Sri Aurobindo (evening) is going to waive off 2%-3%. While Atma Ram Sanatan Dharam College in Dhaula Kuan will give a relaxation of 3% in the first cutoff to girls, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College near Moti Nagar has assured that the cutoff will be 3% for girls except in BA (honours) English.

"This relaxation is offered not only to encourage more girl students to join college but also to maintain the co-ed character of the college. The strength of girls and boys should be comparable in the classroom," said S K Garg, principal, DDU College. He added, "We had only 15-20% girls in a batch of students when we were not giving the relaxation. But when we introduced it, the strength of girls rose to 40%-45%." Relaxation offered to girls also helps colleges promote emerging courses.
