Counselling board will go by Central list of OBCs

The Central Counselling Board (CCB) will rely on the Central list of Other Backward Classes while allotting seats to candidates in the 30 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the five Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), the Centrally-funded institutions (CFIs) and the 23 self-financed institutions (SFIs).

Among the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, the reserved seats will go to candidates coming from families whose annual income is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh.

The CCB, based in the NIT Surathkal, near here, is conducting counselling and allotment of seats online for 2011-12. It is being done on the basis of the all-India ranking given by the Central Board of Secondary Education to those who qualified in the All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) held early this year.

According to the seat matrix published in the CCB Information brochure, 8,805 seats of the 18,411 available in the engineering stream in the all-India and home State quotas have been reserved for the OBCs, the SCs, the STs and candidates with disabilities in each of the three categories. As many as 4,374 of the 15,780 seats are reserved in the 23 SFIs.

G. Srinikethan, Professor in NIT Surathkal and CCB coordinator, said OBC reservation would be made as per the State and Union Territory-wise Central list of Other Backward Classes declared by the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC).

“The caste mentioned by the candidate while writing the AIEEE should figure in the list published by the Commission for allotment of the reserved seat. We will not be considering the OBC list of the State governments,” he said.

The Central list of the NCBC has 216 OBCs and sub-castes from Maharashtra, followed by Orissa (194), Karnataka (185) and Tamil Nadu (181).

As for the SCs and STs, Mr. Srinikethan said the CCB would go by the Union government norm and consider as the creamy layer all candidates who come from families with an annual income more than Rs. 4.5 lakh. Such students would not be given reserved seats. All such candidates would be considered for “Open” category seats meant for all students qualified in the AIEEE. The CCB would provide such OBC/SC/ST candidates a chance to change from the reserved to Open category during the ongoing online registration.

The online registration (www.ccb.nic.in), which began on June 11, will go on till June 23.
