Pondy awaiting MCI nod for admitting 2nd batch students: CM

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy said the government was awaiting Medical Council of India nod for the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute here for continued  admission of second batch of students in the 2011-2012 academic year.
 
"I hope that the permission will be available without loss of time" he told reporters on the sidelines of a function at nearby Dalarshpet.
 
(The college was inaugurated on Oct 9 2010 by AICC leader Sonia Gandhi. MCI had during his subsequent inspection noted deficiency in facilities and had withheld permission for admission of the second batch.The administration rectified it and now the nod of MCI is awaited).
 
Rangasamy also said he planned to visit Delhi to meet AICC leader Sonia Gandhi soon after her return from abroad.
 
(His plan to meet Sonia Gandhi bears significance in the backdrop of opposition Congress demand that he prove his majority).
 
Rangasamy was speaking after launching a revised welfare scheme scheme to present Rs 1000 as monthly aid to the aged.
 
Rangasamy said he was waiting Central clearance for filling vacant posts of all categories, including nursing staff in the maternity hospital.
 
Earlier he launched the revised scheme of payment of monthly assistance to the elderly, widows and destitute women. Under the scheme, assistance had been raised to Rs 1000 a month from Rs 750, benefitting 1.19 lakh persons. It would involve an additional expenditure of Rs 51 crore every year to the government, an official release said.
