The government is preparing to ensure students have glitch-free online admissions to junior colleges following the SSC results that were announced after a week. This time, students are likely to go through a less harrowing time as they will have 7, 000 more seats with 19 new junior colleges being set up in the city over the past one year. It includes 4, 000 seats in the science and commerce streams.
The first phase of the application process has already started with students from all boards filling the application forms. “To fill the first part of their forms, students need not wait for their results. They should start working on it now as they will need their application forms to be approved by their school principals,” said a senior official from the office of the deputy director of education, Mumbai. After the application forms, the students can proceed to work on the option forms, which will be made available to them on the day the SSC results are announced. “Applicants must keep all their forms and certificates ready before they fill the option forms. Those who want to avail of the various quotas, cannot go for the application forms online, but they will have to fill them at the colleges they will seek admissions in, after the SSC results are announced,” added the official. Close to 1.10 lakh seats are available under various quotas including minority, management, sports and culture.
Last year, the online process was riddled with so many problems that many junior-college aspirants did not get admission even after five online lists were published; the education department was forced to take the process offline. This year, to ensure that students are not left in the lurch, applicants have been asked to fill at least 35 college codes in their option forms. “Students should try not to opt for two different streams. They should not repeat any college code,” said the education official.
