Medical college denied permission to admit students for 2011-2012

The Medical Council of India has decided “not to renew the permission” for Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI) to admit its second batch of students for 2011-2012. The decision was made at a “Super-Session” of the Board of Governors of the MCI recently, officials told The Hindu on Thursday.

According to the order sent to the Health Secretary, the MCI has pointed to several deficiencies, including “inadequate” infrastructure and teaching faculty, and “deficiency” in equipment as reasons for not renewing the permission to admit students. The order said that the decision was arrived at following a report submitted to the Board by the team that inspected the college on February 18 and 19.

However, the council, in the order, has asked the secretary to respond, within two weeks of the receipt of the order, as to why the renewal of the permission for the second batch should not be rejected.

Director of Health Dilipkumar Baliga told The Hindu on Thursday that following the receipt of the order, which was issued on April 11, letters have been sent to the MCI asking for specifications of the deficiencies. Terming the assessment report of the MCI as “vague,” Mr. Baliga said though the council had asked for a compliance report, it had not clearly mentioned as to what the deficiencies were.

He said that with regard to the faculty strength, the vacancy was within the statutory limits prescribed by the council. As regards infrastructure, unless the deficiencies were listed out clearly, it would be difficult to do remedies. Mr. Baliga said that officials connected to the college would meet the council members in New Delhi in the next few days to ascertain the facts. The Director of the College could not be contacted for a response.
