Fact-finding panel to probe admission row

Following protests by students alleging they were denied admission in Heramba Chandra College despite making it to the merit list, the syndicate of Calcutta University appointed a fact-finding committee to probe the matter on Wednesday.

Pro vice-chancellor (academics) Dhruvajyoti Chattopadhyay said, “This is completely illegal. We have heard that a group of students and a political party’s supporters had resorted to vandalism, hindering admissions, the last date of which was July 31.”

The CU syndicate, the university’s highest decisionmaking body, had received a letter from college authorities on seats lying vacant.

“The fact-finding committee will probe the reason behind these vacant seats. Meanwhile, registration will start from mid-September. Every college has to follow the same rules. If the inquiry panel finds the grievances of students genuine (that they could not take admission because of vandalism) then we will redress them,” said Chattopadhyay.
