Delhi University tries to create space for everyone; adds 7,000 seats and promotes off-campus colleges. Education times provides an overview for DU aspirants
New Delhi: Delhi University (DU) will begin selling admission forms for various undergraduate courses from June 1. Selling and receipt of the common preadmission forms along with an information bulletin will begin at 16 admission information centres in different parts of the Capital. This year, the university will grant admission to 49,000 students as compared to 42,000 seats last year.
Pre-empting high demand for on-campus colleges, university officials have advised students to apply for a course of their choice rather than the college. "DU has space for everyone. But by applying only to three to four colleges in the admission forms, many students missed out on an opportunity last year," said S K Vij, dean, students’ welfare, DU. In his opinion, choosing a smart combination of college and course can earn students a seat.
"Students should opt for more colleges," advised Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean, students’ welfare, DU. Tuteja also highlighted DU’s BA (Progamming) course, which he said was deigned to give students more options. `Under this programme students can take a combination of vocational subjects like apparel design and construction, advertising sales promotion and sales management, food technology, foreign trade practice, and so on. So, if a student selects the right combination of subjects, the college would not matter in the long run,’’ he said.
On the other hand, Deepak Pental, vice-chancellor, DU, asked students to consider selecting options for a number of applied science courses that DU colleges have been offering. `We have separated science from technology. These applied science courses integrate these two aspects and would offer greater opportunities to students,’’ he said.
Intake increase
DU will also hold counselling sessions for SC/ST candidates. Students from these categories need to get themselves registered at any of the following registration centres: Arts Faculty at North Campus; Office of the Deputy Dean of Students’ Welfare at South Campus; Rajdhani College and Shyam Lal College.
This time around, the university has also issued a special information brochure for SC/ST candidates in the form of frequently asked questions’ or FAQs. The document also carries important dates on counselling sessions and a check-list on the documents that need to be submitted by students under these categories. Further, candidates with special needs applying to DU are advised to register themselves at the Students’ Welfare Office (North Campus).
DU has announced 18 per cent reservation, an increase of 9 per cent, for other backward classes (OBC) candidates from the upcoming academic session. `This year the reservation will be increased to 18 per cent. Similarly, next year, the reservation will be increased to 27 per cent as per the directions of the Supreme Court,’’ informed Pental.
Having increased the reservation percentage for OBC candidates, the university has increased the total number of seats. Also, the university would pass-on’ vacant seats to general category candidates. Vij elaborated, `We could not do anything last year as the Supreme Court took a call on the situation after our admission process was over. This year, we have got instructions from the HRD ministry to transfer vacant OBC seats to other categories.’’
