The girl students had a negligible presence in the most coveted business schools of the nation, the India Institutes of Management (IIM’s). But now the scenario is going to change with the move of IIM’s to admit more number of girl students for their flagship post graduate programme (PGP). The primary aim of this new move is to churn out more Indian woman business leaders.
The IIM Kozhikode (IIM-K) is going to admit at least 100 girl students for the current academic year. The figure is record highest in the history of IIMs. It is to be noted here that only a quarter among all the students who appear for Common Aptitude Test (CAT) are girls and only 10 per cent among them makes it to the IIMs. Girls are also taking the most advantage of quota or reservation system. Around 25 per cent of the total seats reserved under quota system have been occupied by the girl students. Notably at IIM-Calcutta (IIM-C) out of total 290 students enrolled for the 2010-2012 session of PGDM course, 38 are girls. Similar scenario is prevalent at the other IIMs too.
With the changing mentality of Indian parents to invest in their girls and more and more corporate houses recruiting female management graduates, girls are veering towards for a management degree like never before.
