Colleges to have 20% reservation for girls

Updated on: Thursday, June 17, 2010

Across all the universities and their affiliated colleges in Uttar Pradesh, 20 per cent of seats will be reserved for women. The state government had issued an order to this effect on June 11.
However, the 20 per cent quota for women will not be given separately but within the already existing quotas.

“In most of the universities, the percentage of girls is more than the boys, in certain categories the percentage of women, however, is low. This will give more chance to girls in those categories,†said Anil Sant, Principal Secretary of Higher Education.

According to the government, the Uttar Pradesh Technical University has been implementing this for quite some time.

Apart from it, the universities and colleges will reserve 5 per cent seats for dependents of ex-Armymen, 3 per cent for physically challenged and 2 per cent for dependents of freedom fighters in all the courses.

The Lucknow University has already decided to implement the 20 per cent reservation for girls in admissions to different courses at under-graduate and post graduate level. The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting held on Tuesday.

Lucknow University Registrar G P Tripathi said: “The universities have enough girl candidates but this may not be true for the colleges.â€

Of the total number of students, there are around 60 per cent girls at present, he said, adding that after the implementation of reservation the number of girl students is likely to rise.
