As directed by the Supreme Court on October 07, 2016, the Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER) Mumbai have to fill the vacant medical seats. In April, Supreme Court set the deadline for medical admission by September 30 deadline. The controversy over seeking admission in the deemed universities and self-financing medical colleges in the state was seen.
In the Supreme Court, DMER filed a petition last week which is seeking right to bring deemed colleges under a centralised process, which went in their favour. While admissions already done by the institutes were regularised, the remaining seats were ordered to be filled up by DMER.
On October 06, the Supreme Court asked the state Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER) to complete admissions to fill-in the vacant seats in government and private medical and dental institutes across Maharashtra by October 7. As per reports, DMER was unable to complete the process of admission by September 30. As reported, there are 50 vacant seats in the dental course and 30 in the MBBS course.
Previously, DMER had applied Supreme Court for extension of dates twice, but previous two atempts were rejected by the Supreme court. Since they were not able to fill the vancant seats. However, DMER applied third time for extension of date. About admissions, Dr Pravin Shingare, director, DMER in a recent HT report said, "We had asked for another extension, but the court refused. So now, we will try to finish the process by Friday."
"The court made it clear that colleges cannot delay commencement of lectures, so the deadline for admissions was not extended," Shingare added.
