A total of 183 students are vying for the 86 seats available for admission through the quota for foreign nationals (FN); persons of Indian origin (PIO); children of Indian workers in the Gulf countries; and the non-resident Indians (NRI) at the prestigious College of Engineering Pune (CoEP) here.
The CoEP, an autonomous college and one of the oldest technical institutions in the country, is among the two engineering colleges in the state that offer admissions through FN/PIO/NRI and Gulf quota.
CoEP director Anil Sahasrabudhe, who is also the competent authority for these admissions, said, "The number of seats available for these admissions is on a supernumerary basis i.e. over and above the approved student intake." The CoEP's approved intake is 570 seats for nine engineering branches.
The state government and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have allowed 15% over and above this intake to be filled through the quota for FN/PIO/NRI and Gulf students. The number works out to 86 seats.
On Thursday, the college released a provisional merit list of all the 183 candidates, who have applied for admission. The highest score in the physics, chemistry, and mathematics (PCM) group for the top-ranked student in the list is 97.33% while the lowest score is of 45.33%.
Sahasrabudhe said, "We have released the provisional merit list with a view to enable the students to check their details and ensure that there are no errors. In case of any grievance they can get the same rectified. We plan to release the allotment list for Round-I admissions tonight after the period of grievance redressal is over."
According to the CoEP information brochure, one third of the 15% supernumerary seats are reserved for the children of Indian workers in the Gulf countries. "The government extends subsidy in fees to these students although, their admissions are effected purely on merits," said S S Pardeshi, admissions coordinator at the CoEP. "The fees of these students is at par with the fees paid by Indian students," he said. The remaining two-third seats are reserved for Gulf/PIO/FN/NRI quota for which the fees are $ 5,000 each and other charges.
"Students from Gulf countries are also at liberty to explicitly mention in the form their willingness to opt for seats available through the NRI quota. Normally, the preference is to allot such students a seat in the quota for children of Indian workers in the Gulf countries but, in case of non-availability of seat, they can be given admission through NRI quota for which they do not get any subsidy in fees," said Pardeshi. "The provision is mainly because of the fact that children of Indian workers in Gulf countries are also NRIs, but all NRIs are not from Gulf," he added.
Candidates who have passed their higher secondary certificate (HSC, Std XII) examination from the Maharashtra state board of secondary and higher secondary or its equivalent board with PCM subjects and have either studied English as one of the subjects or as a medium of instruction are eligible for admissions through these quota. They should have minimum 45% marks in the PCM group.
The eligibility of the candidates passing their HSC or equivalent examination from a school, college or exam board located outside India is further decided by the university authorities to which the candidate is admitted. The eligibility certificate is issued by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi.
