Hindi is the new favourite with foreign students in Delhi University. For the first time, 10 Chinese students have applied for Hindi in DU this year. Candidates from 10 other countries have also applied for Hindi course. Moreover, there has been a marginal increase in number of foreign aspirants. Students from over 100 nations have registered this year as against 90 in 2012.
According to the foreign students registry of the university, while the maximum applications have been received for Bachelor in Management Studies, commerce and political science, the surprise trend has been the growing interest in Hindi. While aspirants from neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh used to come for Hindi course, it's the interest of the Chinese students which is noteworthy.
Dean (foreign students), DU, Veena Mishra, said, "Apart from increased number of applications from 108 countries, what is new this year is that we have 10 students from China applying for Hindi. It is an interesting trend. Interest in Hindi is also increasing among applicants from other countries."
More than 2,500 foreigners have applied for a seat in DU this year. This includes aspirants from South Asian countries like South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. "Students from Japan, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Russia and African nations have also registered," said Mishra.
Around 600 students have applied for fellowships at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). DU has introduced an English language proficiency course this year, a part-time course which is mandatory for international students. There is a 5% seat reservation for international students.
Last year, the university had received 2,200 applications. According to Mishra, around one-third of the applicants this year will be offered admission.
