Lucknow university thinking to go for off-campus online counseling for the applicants

Updated on: Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Lucknow University's online window for admissions to undergraduate courses closed on Monday with 20,026 registrations along with fee submission. Last year, university had received 19,562 application forms, while in 2011, the figure stood at 17,600.

University admission committee officials expect the number to rise slightly as the last date for fee submission is June 18 while candidates may submit application forms till June 20. "The total number of registrations is 36,500," said Anil Mishra, an admission committee official.

Though the university authorities did not share information on subject-wise registration, they confirmed that maximum applications had poured in for Commerce. "The subject-wise number of application forms will be finalised after June 20," said an official. The merit cut-off list will be announced in a day or two, said the officials.

For the first time, the university is thinking to go for off-campus online counseling for the applicants. The counseling is expected to begin from July 1. Also, there is a possibility that candidates will be given a choice to opt for among the courses available. "This will be on the lines of B Ed counseling. A student will only visit the university for verification of documents and will have the chance to choose a course from home. The subjects will be awarded according to the merit list,'' said an official.

Looking at the trend of past years, the expected merit cut-off for BA should have scored around 74-77 final index. The final index is calculated to remove disparity between the marks awarded to the candidates by different boards of education/examination. Statistically, the first rank of one Board will be equal to the first rank of another Board. This means that the first rank student of each board will be considered to have obtained 100% marks and the aggregate marks of all other students of that board will be normalised with reference to the aggregate marks obtained by the first rank students of that board. For example, if the aggregate marks of the first ranker of a board is 95%, the normalised aggregate will be considered 100% and if a student of the same board has obtained 90%, the normalised marks will be 90. 100/95 = 85.5. This is known as the final index on which merit cut-off is released.

For admissions to B Com, the ideal cut-off is expected to be between 83-87 marks. However, the cut-off in B Com dipped significantly for UP Board students last year - from 87.2 in 2011 to 82.8 last year. For ISC and CBSE students too, the cut-off for B Com dropped from 87.4 and 87.2 in 2011, respectively to 85.2 last year. A student securing an aggregate of 85-88 marks will be able to make it to B Sc (Maths). In B Sc (Biology), the cut-offs has been around 80-84%. In BA (Hons), 77-81 marks can do wonders for students. But for B Com (Hons), the cut-offs are expected to cross 90 mark. In the past two years, the cut-off for the course has been hovering around 90. For LLb (Hons), the merit cut-off should be between 82-85.

Even after the high cut-offs, the biggest challenge for university officials is to retain meritorious students in Lucknow. Most of the talented students choose Delhi University or colleges in metro cities over LU. "The biggest reason is the quality of education in terms of infrastructure and academics, which we lack,'' said a senior university professor.

On Monday, National PG College also pulled up the shutters on UG registrations. The college received a total of 11,100 forms for conventional courses. Of this, maximum of 6,500 forms were received for B Com, which emerged as the top choice of students. Next, 2,300 forms were received for B Sc Maths followed by 1,600 in BA. In B Sc Bio, a total of 700 applications were received. In professional courses for which NPGC conducts LU Associated Colleges Management Admission Test (LUACMAT), 750 forms were received for B Com (Hons), 620 for BCA and 587 for BBA. Admissions to all colleges offering professional courses will be made through LUACMAT. Meanwhile, NPGC extended the last date for registering for post-graduate courses from June 17 to June 25.

Meanwhile, the LU declared the results of BA final (Hons) and BCom II on Monday. Students can check the results on university's website: www.lkouniv.ac.in
