Open universities competing to lure students to their various programmes

At a time when the undergraduate and post graduate admissions have begun in regular degree colleges, open universities are also on to take in students in their various regular and professional degree and diploma programmes.

Open universities have an edge above other state government universities with nominal tuition fee. Besides these universities have also started placement assistance to students.

One of the oldest and the renowned open universities is Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

One can choose from various programmes offered by the university including professional degree, diploma as well as certificate courses via three different modes i.e. online education, distance learning mode and on-campus studies.

A counsellor of IGNOU study centre at PPN Degree College said, "IGNOU is one of the oldest and most progressed open universities in India which allows people of any age to take up studies. It offers more than 600 degree, diploma and certificate programmes, and that too at a very nominal tuition fee." 

With the prospectus costing Rs 100 only, it can be collected from any of the study centers located at HBTI, PPN and Christ Church College before July 31 for July session.

However, there are some other options as well, like, Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU), which also has a variety of professional and regular degree programmes for the students.

"UPRTOU offers various diplomas, degree and management programmes at both graduation as well as at post-graduation level. It also offers Phd and MPhil programmes," said Sarvesh Pandey, center head of one of the centers of UPRTOU.

One can apply for registration till the end of July for any course through various study centers of UPRTOU including VSSD College at Nawabganj, Juhari Devi Girls College among others.

Even CSJMU runs various programmes for humanities and commerce stream in provisional (private) study pattern. The prospectus will be available in the campus from August.

Also, Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), which has four study centers in the city and offers admission on every quarter of the year, is another viable option for the students. Director of one of the study centers of SMU, SK Arora said, "SMU is affiliated to UGC and it basically offers Information Technology (IT) and management degree and diploma programmes, however it also offers various courses related to humanities stream as well."
