Rescinding another decision taken by former vice-chancellor GB Pattanaik, Lucknow University has decided to continue to reserve 80% seats for its undergraduate students seeking admission to post-graduate courses. Pattanaik had scrapped this criterion with a view towards attracting the best of talent from across the country.
In LU's post graduate admission process, likely to begin from June 15, 80% of the total seats will be for the applicants from within the campus while only 20% students from other universities will have a chance to apply for PG courses. University officials cite non-amendment of university's ordinance as the reason for non-implementation of the new rule.
Admission committee officials, however, informed that admission process for PG courses will be on similar lines as for UG courses. This year, it is expected the process would begin slightly early. Last year, university began the sale of application form from July 1. But before that university officials were yet to take a final stand on 67 courses, majorly diploma and certificate courses, suspended last year on account of insufficient number of students.
A committee under the leadership of A K Sengupta is reportedly working on the feasibility to revive these courses. The committee that comprises deans of all faculties is expected to submit a report in the first week of June. "We need to see the academic and financial viability of these courses. The committee will also recommend measures to improve the quality of the programmes so as to make it more employable, useful and to meet societal needs,'' said Sengupta. Besides, fee rationalisation of the courses will also be looked upon. The committee was to submit the report on May 18.
Admission officials say the information is being gathered by the respective departments in order to finalise the list of courses for the academic session 2013-14. The final dates for admissions to PG courses will be announced shortly, said an official.
