The University of Delhi has decided to do away with the entrance exam for Bachelor in Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) programme. The admission to the programme will happen on the basis of merit.
"It is a strict university directive that there will be no entrance exam for the course in journalism, so none of the colleges can keep any entrance test or devise a plan for screening of the students. They will have to stick to the marks of best of four subjects including a language. Most colleges would consider the marks of English, at least our college would," says Geetesh Nirban, media coordinator, Kamala Nehru College.
The course, till last year, was offered at five colleges, Lady Shri Ram College, Kamala Nehru College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Kalindi College and Maharaja Agrasen College. This year, IP College for women will join the list of colleges offering this programme.
While the previous journalism course - BA (H) journalism stressed more on print than electronic, the new BJMC course structure brings together important aspects of television journalism along with radio and digital media. Some of the new courses include a course in new media , which has modules like introduction to new media; understanding new media technologies and application , which is about social media and digital technology; impact of new media on journalism and mass communication , which will see students studying through case studies, etc. Another new course is integrated marketing communication, which will have modules on promotional tools, branding solutions, campaigning etc.
The course will be taught through interactive lecture sessions, documentary film screenings, and discussions of communication in everyday life and student presentations.
