Judging by the number of queries on the subject, Delhi University officials "anticipate" there will be more applicants for computer science this year than even economics. The BTech in Computer Science, say officials, "will attract students who were not able to get into the best engineering colleges".
They also say switching of the undergraduate psychology course from 'BA (Honours) in Psychology' to 'BTech in Psychological Science' has aroused interest with many questions being asked on it at DU's Open Days. The third round of orientation-the first Open Day of a series of nine-was conducted by the dean of students' welfare at North Campus on May 20.
In Humanities, there's interest in economics, English and journalism and mass communication, as there is every year. "There is also a great deal of interest in Bachelor with Honours in Management Studies as from this year the Faculty of Management Studies will oversee the running of the course," says J M Khurana, dean of students' welfare.
Some students wanted to know if the removal of BCom programme implies they'll all be studying 'BCom Honours'. "That nomenclature is gone," she was told. "It is now Bachelor with Honours in Commerce." Asked if maths will be compulsory for commerce, Khurana says that additional criteria for reserved categories have already been scrapped and "discussion for general category is on".
Considering that FYUP was introduced mainly to enhance the employability of DU's graduates, counsellors didn't seem to be able to answer a candidate who'd asked what kind of job a four-year course will bring. "When you get a job and how we can't say. That depends on how well you do and from where you do your course," a counsellor said.
