Despite Utkal University's failed e-admission experiment last year, Sambalpur University (SU) has decided to replicate it. To start with, the university will conduct online admission for post graduate courses for 2013-14.
Confirming the move, SU Post Graduate Council chairman Shukadeb Naik said after admission dates are announced, students can log onto the varsity website. They can download the prospectus and submit the application online and upload their photo at the designated place. If a student makes any mistake, it can be edited easily. Students have to deposit fees in the given 'Power Jyoti' account number of the varsity. They will get a reference number, which they will have to write in their forms. They have to get a printout of the submitted form and send the hard copy along with photocopies of necessary documents to the PG department concerned for processing for their pre-admission entrance test. They can also download admit cards for the entrance.
"Students should check eligibility criteria properly before applying for any course as the varsity will not intimate if their forms are rejected on the eligibility grounds," said Naik.
After the entrance test, list of successful candidates will be displayed in order of merit. Naik said students applying for multiple courses have to deposit separate application forms. E-governance cell of the varsity with the help of a private vendor is undertaking the e-admission process.
SU has 22 regular PG courses having sanctioned strength of 578 besides 12 self-financing courses with a students' intake of 282. Around 3,000 students had applied for admission to various courses last year.
Utkal had introduced the mandatory e-admission process in the last academic year. However, after complaints of confusion and chaos by students as well as teachers, the varsity had to allow offline submission of forms and deposit of fees. Utkal had faced another major problem regarding collection of fee. Students were asked to deposit fees in the varsity account and attach its reference slip with the printout of application forms. A section of applicants allegedly made photocopies of the slips and used the same to apply for multiple departments, resulting in financial loss to the varsity, Utkal sources said.
Conceding to last year's failure, Utkal PG Council chairman P K Mishra said this time corrective measures will be taken. "Students have to pay fees in the form of bank draft as was the practice during offline admission. They have to attach the original draft with the printouts of online submitted forms. There will be no direct deposit of fees by applicants in the varsity account," Mishra said.
