State decides to conduct its own entrance for medical-allied courses

Students and parents are confused with two entrance examinations coming in the way of admissions to medical and allied courses next year in place of just one entrance so far.

For admission to MBBS and BDS courses, students will have to appear for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) while for entry to agriculture, veterinary fisheries, homeopathy, siddha and unani courses, they will need to qualify in the ent-rance exam to be conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations.

The state had in a strange move, decided to conduct its own entrance for medical-allied courses while joining NEET. Parents say the state should have followed Maharashtra, which had decided to take students for MBBS/BDS and other medical allied courses from the rank list prepared after NEET.

“The move of the state defeats the very purpose for which NEET was devised — to avoid multiple entrances,” said Rajan, a parent.

However, commissioner of entrance examinations B.S. Mavoji told DC that entrances to the medical allied courses in state had been incorporated this year as a contingency measure.

“Last year there were also moves at the Centre to conduct NEET, which did not fructify. This year too, nobody is sure that it will happen as some states are opposing it. So, if we have to conduct the entrance on our own, what we need to do now is to add MBBS/BDS to the present list,” he said.
