Students who have passed out Intermediate and 12th class in 2012 and aim to appear for the IIT-JEE next year will be allowed to take exams again to improve their marks enabling them to figure in the top 20 percentile of the respective boards, which is mandatory for the IIT test from next year.
As per the new norms students have to be in the top 20 percentile of the respective boards to gain eligibility for the IIT-JEE next year, irrespective of the scores they get in the test, which will be held in two layers – IIT-Main and IIT-Advanced. The HRD Ministry’s meeting held recently to constitute the JEE Apex Board (JAB) for the smooth conduct of the test discussed the issue at length and provided this opportunity for the repeaters.
The notification issued said that the respective State Boards would make appropriate arrangements for helping out these students through a special dispensation. Students from Andhra Pradesh would immensely benefit with this as majority of them tend to ignore the board exams to allocate more time for the IIT-JEE preparation. Since the ‘top 20 percentile’ condition is a recent one, the IIT-JEE repeaters in the State were in a dilemma whether they would get a chance to improve their scores.
Another interesting decision taken by the MHRD meeting is that the examinations will be conducted in the regional language if the concerned State government comes up with a request to that effect. Thousands of students who study Intermediate in Telugu medium, particularly from the government colleges, wish to appear for the test in Telugu medium as they are more comfortable with the terminology in Telugu.
The meeting also constituted the JAB-2013 committee and it will be headed by Ashok Misra, former Director of IIT Bombay.
