The University of Madras has decided to conduct online interviews for its doctoral students through Skype, the software which allows users to make voice and video calls over the Internet.
Vice-chancellor, Prof. G.
Thiruvasagam, says the facility will help several students registered with the university for a Ph.D who had gone abroad for reasons of employment and marriage.
“We have received several requests from students asking us to relax the norms for attending doctoral committee meetings in person as this would mean spending Rs 1 lakh on travel from the countries they had moved to.
So now we have asked doctoral guides to conduct all meetings through video conferencing or Skype,” the VC said.
The university also intends to use Skype to help students interact with faculty abroad. “At present our faculty share documents with faculty abroad through email.
But universities abroad also have sophisticated equipment which we would like to expose our students to. So we plan to use skype to help these students see the equipment and also conduct online lectures”, he added.
Madras University is exploring the possibility of conducting distance education courses online as well. “We hope to conduct live online lecturers and allow students to interact with the faculty concerned through Skype”, Prof. Thiruvasagam explained.
